Always In Earnest

Welcome to our family food blog, where we preserve the recipes and traditions that nourish us, in body and soul, along our journey of life.

About us

I kept meaning to start a food blog, I really did! But where did the time go? It almost seemed that one day I was giving birth to my oldest daughter Audrey, and then the next day I blinked and we were headed down the interstate with her suitcase packed for college!

After we organized her dorm room, stocked her fridge, and said our proudest and most tearful goodbyes, we drove away. What a rush of emotions! I felt so happy that she was attending a university where she could access all her hopes and dreams! And I missed her SO much! At the same time, my mind continued to go to the practical side of things: fueling her mind and body at college!

I kept thinking of family recipes I needed to send her at college so that she could make the foods she grew up with. I made tomato soup one night for dinner and thought, “Audrey would love to make this!” But then I got thinking, in just a few short years I’d have another child spreading his wings and figuring out how to feed himself 3 times a day. And a few years after that, another daughter. I’m sure I’ll blink again and then I’ll have grandchildren!

After thinking through all of that, it just made more sense to get this blog going! That way, Audrey and her siblings can access the recipes from anywhere in the world that their adventures take them. If they want to share a recipe with a friend, it will be easy. An added bonus of having these recipes typed up and preserved forever is that it will become a family history of sorts. A culinary collection of memories. Family history preserved in food photographs, one family meal at a time.

Our children’s needs have a way of becoming the top priority for parents. I hope that Audrey, her siblings, her friends and roommates, and maybe one day even their children, find this blog useful for years to come. And I hope it brings you joy too.

As in any family, you’re likely to find some things you love, some things that make you laugh, some things that drive you crazy, but ultimately a place you enjoy being. A place where you feel safe and loved. Welcome to the family!
